Introduction:

 

One of the most common misconceptions about the Rapture is that the Revelation and Rapture are the exact same event. Usually, this is due to a lack of comparison between the texts describing the events. Often this misconception leads people to believe in a Post-Tribulation Rapture. Therefore, it is important in this section to present the distinctions between the Rapture and Revelation. However, beforehand we must understand what is meant by “Revelation.” It certainly is not referring to the actual book. Instead, it is the second event in the Second Coming. The Second Coming, according to dispensational thought, takes place in two parts.

 

The Rapture is the term for the event described in passages such as 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-55; John 14:1-3; etc., while the Revelation is described in passages such as Zechariah 14; Matthew 13; 24; Revelation 19; etc. Therefore, in order to prove that the Rapture and Revelation are separate events, the differences in the Rapture and Revelation passages must be demonstrated. Many of these distinctions were pointed out by my friend Jacob Fain.

 

Distinction 1:

 

(Rapture) Jesus comes for His bride the Church:

 

"Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And when I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.” John 14:1-3 KJV

 

“For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 KJV

 

(Revelation) Jesus comes with His Bride the Church: 

 

“And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.” Zechariah 14:5 KJV

 

It’s not Old Testament saints that follow the Revelation because their resurrection has not yet happened:

 

"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever."

Daniel 12:1-3 KJV

 

“When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” Colossians 3:4 KJV

 

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints” Jude 14 KJV

 

"And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean." -Revelations 19:14 KJV

 

What was the army made of? “All of the following members of the armies of heaven wear fine linen, white and pure. As His followers, redeemed believers are clothed in the garments of salvation and wear robes of righteousness. Isaiah 61:10 declares, ‘I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness.’ They bear the righteousness of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). Further, Christ's followers ride white horses, symbolic of the victory they share with their Lord. Distinction 2:

 

(Rapture) Jesus comes in the air, and believers are gathered to Him in the clouds:

 

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 KJV

 

(Revelation) Jesus descends to the ground: 

 

“And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.” -Zechariah 14:4 KJV

 

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.” - Revelations 19:11-21 KJV

 

Distinction 3:

 

(Rapture) The Mount of Olives is unaffected and not mentioned in any Rapture passage

 

(Revelation) The Mount of Olives is affected and mentioned:

Distinction 4:

 

(Rapture) Christians are taken, and unbelievers are left behind:

(Revelation) The wicked are gathered, and the Tribulation Saints are left behind:

 

“He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.” Matthew 13:28-30 KJV

 

Both the wicked and the righteous both cannot be taken first. 

 

Distinction 5: 

 

(Rapture) Only believers will see Jesus as it will happen extremely quickly:

 

“In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.” 1 Corinithians 15:52 KJV

 

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” 1 Thessalonians 4:17 KJV

 

The Rapture in these passages is described as being extremely quick. 1 Corinthians 15:52 states it will happen in the “twinkling of an eye,” while in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, Paul describes the Rapture as being “caught up” (Greek: harpazó), which means to “snatch.” The word “snatch” indicates the Rapture will happen extremely quickly. Thus, it can be deduced that it will happen so quickly that no one left on earth will be able to see it. 

 

(Revelation) Every eye will see Jesus as it will be a slow public event:

 

“And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” Zechariah 12:10 KJV

 

“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24:30 KJV

 

“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.” Revelation 1:7 KJV

 

Distinction 6:

 

(Rapture) Jesus comes with no mention of a white horse:

Distinction 7:

 

(Rapture) The Rapture is a message of hope and comfort:

 

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:17-18 KJV

 

“Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” Titus 2:13 KJV

 

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” 1 John 3:2-3 KJV

 

1 John 3:1-3 is talking about the Rapture. That is, it is speaking on the resurrection and the glorification of our bodies, the resurrection of the Church. When you look at it, he (John) says we are sons of God, but it does not appear we are sons of God because we still look like ordinary human beings, but at the Rapture, people will see that we look like sons of God because we will have our glorified bodies. John calls it a “hope” in verse 3, which is a parallel passage to Titus 2:13 that also calls this event a “hope.”

 

(Revelation) The Revelation is a message of judgment:

 

“Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.” Joel 3:12-16 KJV

 

“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:” Malachi 4:5 KJV

Distinction 8:

 

(Rapture) Jesus descends with a shout:

 

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:” 1 Thessalonians 4:16 KJV

 

(Revelation) There is no mention of a shout: 

 

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. Distinction 10: 

 

(Rapture) Believers rise into the clouds with Jesus, with no mention of angels:

As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; the which when a man hath found, he hideth, and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away. Distinction 11:

 

(Rapture) Only those who hold salvation are affected 

 

(Revelation) The entire world is affected

 

Distinction 12:

 

(Rapture) The Kings of the earth are not gathered against Israel at Armageddon

 

(Revelation) The Kings of the earth are gathered against Israel at Armageddon:

 

"And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon." Revelation 16:16 KJV
