A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Molucca Sea in eastern Indonesia on April 2, 2026, triggering regional tsunami warnings and sending residents across North Maluku and North Sulawesi rushing to higher ground. The quake occurred at a depth of about 10 km, making it a shallow and potentially destructive event in one of the world’s most active seismic zones.

According to early assessments, the epicenter was located roughly 120 km west‑northwest of Ternate, a major city in North Maluku. Shaking was felt strongly across the surrounding islands, including Halmahera and parts of Sulawesi.

Initial reports indicated structural damage in several coastal communities, including cracked walls, fallen ceilings, and disrupted power in parts of Ternate and nearby islands. Emergency officials said they were still evaluating the extent of the damage, and no casualties had been confirmed in the first hours after the quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for areas within 1,000 km of the epicenter, warning that hazardous tsunami waves between 0.3 and 1 meter were possible along portions of the Indonesian coastline. Neighboring countries, including the Philippines, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea, were advised to monitor for potential sea‑level changes, though no significant waves had been reported immediately after the event.

The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks, the strongest reaching magnitude 5, as the region continued to experience seismic activity typical of the complex tectonic interactions beneath the Molucca Sea.

Indonesia, which sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, experiences frequent earthquakes and tsunamis. Authorities urged residents to remain cautious as aftershocks continue and assessments of coastal areas proceed.
