A 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred on Oct. 22, 2026 at around 10:33 pm local time (10:33 am EST) in northern Tibet, China. It occurred in a remote high-altitude region where some of the highest cities of the nation are. Its epicenter was located in a county within Nagqu, about 250 miles north of the Tibetan capital. The quake originated approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) beneath the surface, according to the Chinese agency's preliminary measurements, placing it in the category of shallow earthquakes. Currently there are no reports of fatalities that occurred due to the earthquake. However, local authorities report two known injuries in a village near the epicenter as well as cracks in houses in the region. Aftershocks have occurred after this initial large earthquake. This event occurred along the Eurasian tectonic plate where it meets the Indian plate. This boundary creates the mighty Himalayas and the vast Tibetan plateau.
