Sedimentology focuses on the origin, transport, deposition, and lithification of sediments, from loose grains to fully formed sedimentary rocks. By studying sedimentary structures, grain characteristics, and depositional environments, sedimentologists reconstruct past landscapes, climates, and geological processes. Because most fossils and many natural resources occur in sedimentary settings, sedimentology is essential for interpreting Earth’s history and its biological and environmental changes.
