Volcano Eruption in Ethiopia Shocks the African Continent
The Hayli Gubba Volcano in Ethiopia erupted on November 23, 2025 after it was dormant for thousands of years and has never been recorded as erupting in written history. The volcano's eruption sent thick plumes of smoke 45,000ft into the sky (8 ½ miles). The volcano is located in Ethiopia’s afar region which is on the north east side of the country.
Around 20:00 UTC on November 23, VAAC Toulouse confirmed that the eruption had stopped. Currently the plume which contains both ash and sulfur dioxide from the volcano has shifted east and is over Yemen and Oman. There are currently no reported casualties. However, there is risk of economic damage for livestock herders and other businesses within the region. It is possible that this eruption could cool climate temperatures temporarily similar to Mount Pinatubo in 1991.
