A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook the border region between Alaska and Canada’s Yukon Territory on Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Despite the strength of the quake, officials reported no injuries or significant damage as of 10:30 p.m. EST. The earthquake struck at 11:41 a.m. local time, northeast of Yakutat, Alaska, in an area known for its extensive fault systems. Seismologists noted that while the event was strong, it was not unexpected given the region’s seismic history.
The USGS reported the epicenter was located about 230 miles (370 kilometers) northwest of Juneau, Alaska, and approximately 155 miles (250 kilometers) west of Whitehorse, Yukon. Following the main shock, the Alaska Earthquake Center confirmed more than 20 aftershocks, several registering above magnitude 5.0. Authorities stressed that there was no tsunami warning issued, and emergency services have not received reports of casualties or major structural damage. Monitoring agencies continue to track aftershocks and assess potential impacts in nearby communities. Residents across parts of Alaska and Yukon reported feeling the tremors, but officials reassured the public that the seismic activity posed no immediate threat. The event underscores the region’s vulnerability to earthquakes due to its complex fault lines.
